Glen was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who lived each day to the fullest. He always said, “I'm here for a good time....not a long time.” He was born on Dec 21st, 1947 in the old Carman hospital to Cliff and Clara Carr. He was raised on the farm South of Homewood along with his younger brother Brent where he helped work on the family farm. In his youth, Glen was a prankster and enjoyed many good times and laughs with his school friends from Brigdenly and the Carman Collegiate. After graduation, Glen attended the University of Manitoba to receive an agriculture diploma. In his early years, he was employed by Federal Grain in Winnipeg. He eventually left this job to work on the farm with his father in the Summer and would spend his Winters in Calgary as a salesman at a Scorpion snowmobile dealership.
He met the love of his life, Maureen Drysdale in 1969 when they were both in a bridal party for their friend/cousin wedding. It was at that event that Glen wondered, “who is that girl?” It would be a few years later in October of 1972 when fate would bring them together again. Maureen had moved to Winnipeg for a job and Glen initiated their courtship.
They were married on Aug 4th, 1973 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and they celebrated 50 wonderful years together. They moved to the family farm where they raised their two children, Kristen and Scott. Glen eventually stopped farming when the kids were young, and took on many jobs over the years with the Homewood Co-op, Blights Farming Equipment, and the RM of Dufferin. He worked tirelessly to help the RM have some of the most resilient shelter belts in the area. When you were driving into the RM from other areas during a windy day, you could notice Glen's legacy. He was a weed supervisor, water conservationist, building inspector, grader operator, and insect control supervisor for the RM of Dufferin, RM of Gray, and Town of Carman.
He retired just before turning 55 and enjoyed a long life of leisure with many fun camping trips, snow birding in Mesa, AZ, tending to their beautiful award winning farmyard, floating down the ravine on the pontoon boat, and volunteering with the Kinsmen, Minor Hockey, being a member of the flying farmers, he was the 50th president of the Homewood Co-op and other worthy causes. He was a proud lifelong Legion member who just received his 50 year pin last year. He could tell you all the history of the area and recall stories like they were last week. These conversations were often had with good friends and family on the patio or deck at 4:30 pm. Everyone knew where Glen would be at this time and often gathered for spontaneous visits with lots of laughter. He was one of a kind.
In the last 14 years, his greatest blessing was becoming a grandfather. Aubrey, Shelby, Easton, and Kayden were his pride and joy -and he loved the family visits to the farm and eventually to the new home in Carman where lots of memories were made. He loved taking the grandkids for rides on the golf cart, teaching them the art of woodworking, and operating his little blue scooter up and down the street.
In his last few years, Glen took up scroll sawing and made some beautiful works of art for friends and family. Everything he did was extremely meticulous, and he always had pride in his work. His vehicles were always cleaned inside and out and all his homes, farm buildings, campers, boats, etc were maintained to the highest standards. These valuable traits were instilled in his children and will continue to live on.
He also was “the go to guy” you would call if you needed help with computer issues, yard work, or DIY projects. In Arizona, he helped many snow birding friends with their technological challenges. Glen always enjoyed helping others and never expected anything in return. He was a loyal and humble man and will be missed immensely by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, his children Kristen (Jay) Parker of Millarville, Alberta and Scott (Andrea) Carr, of Dauphin Manitoba, his grandchildren Aubrey and Easton Carr and Shelby and Kayden Parker, his brothers, Dennis (Cheryl) Young, Leigh (Wendy Brick) Young, Kerry (Val) Young, Bruce Young, sister, Sandra (Bob) Howland, his sister-in-law Kathie Carr of Calgary, Alberta, Uncle Bob Petrie of Armstrong BC and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Cliff and Clara Carr, stepmother, Audrey Carr, brother, Brent Carr, sister, Marleen Russell, and in-laws Wilf and June Drysdale.
A special thank you to Dr. Tyler Atchison for his friendship and unwavering care of Glen over the last year and a half. Also, thank you to the palliative care team, Carman Home Care, and the staff at the Carman Hospital for their kindness and unparalleled support in his last days.
